Commentary: CBS Airs 60 Minutes Pussy Riot Segment

Pussy Riot

Pussy Riot is something I’ve come to the defense of since the beginning of it’s ascent into international discussion. This isn’t just a group of girls coming together as a means to promote hooliganism or spread any sort of religious intolerance, but a provocation of thought. Their use of punk music and unsatisfactory musicianship contribute toward their political activism, combined with promotion of speech freedom is brutally honest and unapologetically bold.

CBS News aired a 60 Minutes segment on the aftermath of the Pussy Riot trials, in which three of the members stood up against a harsh, public legal battle surrounding their performance at Moscow’s largest cathedral. The defense ultimately lost. Two members of the collective are still in captivity, working in labor camps while others are in hiding, and one member chooses to speak freely, without blanketing herself, to Lesley Stahl.

At a performance I did at Rex Theater in Pittsburgh, PA back in 2012, I performed a slightly altered version of my Britney Spears Vs. Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross “Piece of Me” Ambient Remix [Stream & free download by clicking here]. It was prefaced as a political statement and social commentary on the exploitation of the entertainment business, as well as the voice that can be heard throughout it. The most conscious decision was to combine “Painted Sun in Abstract” with the vocal track to “Piece of Me” for the duration of the first two verses and chorus, but take out Britney’s highly compressed and processed vocals and replace them with my own live voice. It was unpracticed, except for once, and was a move calculated to demonstrate the humanity behind the music. The man behind the machine, the band behind the movement. The result? Imperfect, raw. Just the way I wanted it. [You can see the end result by clicking here].

Pussy Riot is an extremely pertinent commentary on the social stigma of speaking out, a political movement smartly aimed at freedom of expression, a feminist declaration, form of peaceful protest, and much more. The Russian government can attempt to stop them, but their efforts will and are presently backfiring on them. Whether this band of women are able to accomplish a movement powerful enough to achieve all of their initial plans is for the future to know, but what they’ve accomplished so far and will continue to consummate has far exceeded what was thought to be a force weak enough to be stopped.

No matter what these girls do from here on out, their moves will be watched, documented, and archived.

Lana Del Rey Covers Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel No 2” & Releases Video

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey has released a cover version of Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel No 2” with an accompanying music video. Seemingly random, but who cares? Del Rey surprises are always welcome.

Just like with any of Lana’s releases, the music is emotionally beyond words. A lone guitar melodically plays while the songstress declares “I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel, you were talking so brave and so sweet. Giving me head on the unmade bed while the limousines wait in the street.” Reverberation sets the simplified depth, melodic and lyrical content are purely available as the front focal points. (There are some underlying, extra brass sections that are buried deep within the mix, that help carry the song).

I keep trying to Google to see why she’s done this, but all I’m receiving so far are excited emoticons and fans typing “we are not worthy” so it doesn’t seem like a new project has been announced as of yet. Updates will come.

Born To Die: Paradise Edition was released November 9th, 2012. Click here to read my review.

Music Business: Last Chance to Buy a Physical Copy of Esthero’s “Everything Is Expensive”

Esthero Everything is Expensive
As if art couldn’t imitate life more than it already has for Esthero’s wonderfully written,  produced, and engineered Everything is Expensive project. The critically acclaimed songstress went independent for the release of her third record and while it was clear that the financial situation to put it all together was strict, it seems as though it’s hindered one of the most prestigious aspects of an album: the physical product.

Esthero posted a letter to her fans on Pledgemusic.com on March 24th, 2013 stating that she has 72 copies of her third record Everything is Expensive to ship out to fans. 36 of them will stay with her for the future, other editions will be available to Canadian shops while they last. But, elsewhere? Gone (and we’re not talking about her collaboration with Cee-Lo Green from Wikked Lil’ Grrrls).

In her own words: “I have no current plans to print up any more, so this is it…for the foreseeable future. Don’t get me wrong – I love physical CD’s. I love to open them up and look at the artwork and read all the credits and stuff: and fuck me if they don’t sound way better than an mp3 – it’s just…. I’m not in the majority. It’s pretty pricey to manufacture them and truly a luxury for an indie artist.”

To read the letter in it’s entirety and purchase a physical copy of the album, please head over to her Pledgemusic.com page. This is depressing, but sadly a reality.

In lighter news, it does look like from the post that we’re receiving a couple more remixes before this era fizzles out. You can also look for an article I’m working on to celebrate the 15th release of her immaculate trip-hop debut Breath From Another. And if you missed it, there’s a pretty in-depth interview I had with her back in November 2012.

Purchase from Pledgemusic.com or iTunes. Read the 2020k review of the record here.

Daft Punk Announce “Random Access Memories” & CD/Vinyl Pre-Sale

DaftPunkHelmetsRAMThere’s no other way to put it: Ladies & Gentlemen, Daft Punk have announced their first studio album in seven years.

Random Access Memories is due out for release under the Columbia Records imprint Daft Life LTD on May 21st, 2013. Collaborators during the recording on this record include Paul Williams, Chic frontman Nile Rodgers, legend Giorgio Moroder, Chilly Gonzales, Nathan East from Fourplay, and Panda Bear from indie favorites Animal Collective.

If the impressive list of talented musicians isn’t enough, there’s an iTunes pre-order up, which doesn’t sound too exciting until you see that iTunes has the track length for the thirteen songs featured on RAM. Recently, I had a conversation with iTunes that went a little something like this:

2020k: How long do you say the record is, iTunes?
iTunes: Oh, I don’t know, RJ. SEVENTY FOUR MINUTES AND TWENTY SEVEN SECONDS.
2020k: Holy shit, that’s a lot of music!
iTunes: Hell yeah, it is! Are you going to pre-order.
2020k: [laughs] No, I’ll probably buy the physical thing. Lossless audio, man! It’s the way to go.
iTunes: Oh, okay. That’s understandable.

(The above conversation may have just been a one sided conversation with myself while I was staring at my laptop, but all that matters is that you all had this sort of conversation with your own computer as well so it seems like a lot of us are crazy).

To top it all off, they’re getting funky. A snippet of one of the songs off this 2013 release has been posted on Randomaccessmemories.com and includes the signature funked out vocal stylings that mention “we’re up all night to get funky.” Also on the website, you’re able to pre-order the CD or pricey $39.98 vinyl.

Check out the website, and don’t forget about the little commercial that debuted on Saturday Night Live back on the 3rd of March. Re-watch it below!

20 Question Round Table Interview With Myself & OTM Blog For Canadian Music Week!

OTMCMW

I’m not from Canada, but boy are Amber and Joe from OTM Blog making me feel like it!

The two of them have been busy interviewing and seeing bands at Canadian Music Week, which runs in Ontario, Toronto from March 19th-24th and focuses highly on independent Canadian music (as well as headlining acts like Stars, Metric and Rihanna. Rihanna isn’t Canadian, but I’m sure she feels just as honorary as I do right now). I highly recommend you follow both of them on Twitter if you’re attending because they’re doing some great interactive activities and a lot of fun and laughs along the way.

Not attending? Follow them anyhow. Amber & I jab each other back and forth like siblings a few times a month.

You’re also going to want to be following both of us because the two of us put our heads together to stage some great giveaways that are happening during this week and will continue to happen afterward. Garbage fans? Pearl Jam fanatics? Iamamiwhoami rascals? Have a little hope… I have things you can win, coming very soon. Watch this blog.

To read more on that and win some amazing prizes, please click here to see the previous blog.

Now, why are you here? There’s a Meet The Staff round table interview that the three of us recently participated in. It’s 20 questions long and spans across subjects like our worst concert going experiences, how Madonna tops all of our bucket lists, and that I want to be made into a PEZ dispenser.

It was a lot of fun to participate in and is filled with laughs and giggles about Spice World (Yes, that movie). You can read the 20 questions by clicking here.

Special note: In case you haven’t scrolled down to the other entries or visited the website or Facebook lately, don’t forget that I released Contagion on the 5th! Click here to read more information and snag your free download of the 5 track project.

Beyonce Teases With Hit-Boy Produced “Bow Down / I Been On”

Beyonce Bow Down I Been OnAll over the internet, all I’ve been reading are angry comments about Beyonce going on tour with no new music. So, we have new music. The Hit-Boy produced “Bow Down” and “I Been On”.

These may be snippets of two different songs, or may just be one three and a half minute tease. Regardless, I’m just going to let this one sink into your skulls.

However, before I do, there’s one thing I’d like to comment on. The beginning measures of “I Been On” sound fantastic. That rhythmic section that sticks out in the mix is definitely a great creative choice, as opposed to having it compressed and mixed into the more supportive section of the song.

Bow down, bitches..

Speaking on the Release of the “Contagion” Single EP

2020k - Contagion Cover Final2020k – Contagion Single EP
01. Contagion (Single Edit)
02. Infected/Placebo
03. Contagion (Kinesthetiac Remix)
04. Contagion (Wet Eyes Remix)
05. Contagion (Kamas Remix 1 & 2)

Click here to download the project.
Wet Eyes Productions also has a download here.

It’s finally here, guys. After working on this project with a circle of close friends and colleagues, I’m exceedingly overjoyed to be able to present to you the “Contagion” Single EP.

Three artists that I’ve reported on and built friendships with have contributed to this extended play. KinesthetiacWet Eyes, and Kamas (also known under his alternate, vaporwave Nyetscape alias) crafted some out of this world remixes that vary from different spectrums of the progressive and experimental continents.

As I received these mixes into my inbox, I felt inspired to take on my own re-working of “Contagion” and out of it “Infection/Placebo” was born. I worked with the same stems that I gave to the musicians in the aforementioned paragraph and crafted an alternate look, a deeper look into what this song is about.

“Contagion” was written, produced, and engineered by myself in the summer of 2012. I had just been booked for some live shows and was increasingly becoming engulfed by anxiety. This song was my way of dealing with it. It was my way of overcoming it, finding my way out of it. “Infection” explores the deeper parts of tension – the ones that you seemingly almost cannot control, and “Placebo” is an example of the opposite.

The project was funded on the hearts of those who contributed and as a result is being given away as a free download through distribution on the Wet Eyes Productions’ Bandcamp. Whether or not there will be a limited physical release is to be determined by general demand, your downloads, your feedback, and the currency I have available in the future to fund it. Please, feel free to download the single or the EP and to share the link and music as you wish.

If you feel inclined give back, to contribute to future artistic endeavors and support the launch point for 2020k as a musical project, then please download the 2020k EP on Bandcamp. You can click here for that. The funds will be transferred directly to me at this point, not a label, so that I can continue to put forth all of the effort and strength needed to carry out prospective things. Not only is the original version of “Contagion” on it, but there are three additional songs that were recorded throughout 2011 and 2012. Songs that are emotional to me, songs that I hope resonate with you.

The thank you list…

I’d like to give a special thank you to the artists who created their versions of this song, and a huge thank you to Ross Auger for the help and opportunity to release this under Wet Eyes Productions. Thank you to my brother, Jacob Kozain, for braving the cold and taking the cover photo, to Devan Monroe for his input, and to Natalie Zigarovich for putting together the final cover. Also, to Johnny Daggers for his work on the debut music video so far.

Finally, I’d like to thank everyone who has supported 2020k so far, who has come to the live shows, and specifically to Kristen Adams, Ashley Weinman, and Eldora Lynn. You three were the first to hear “Contagion” and in pure, anxiety ridden form I was nervous for your opinions. Thank you for always being there – without you, and without everyone else – there wouldn’t be “Contagion”

Thank you & enjoy.

x
RJ

Tricky Announces “False Gods” Album & Reminisces on “Pre-Millenium Tension” on Lead Single “Nothing’s Changed”

Tricky False Gods

Good ole’ Tricky is out to get us again with his first record since 2010’s Mixed Race.

False Idols is the new project and is being advertised, as with most Tricky projects, by drawing comparisons to his groundbreaking and legendary debut Maxinquaye and also attacks today’s entertainment pop spectrum in it’s press release.

“Why the name False Idols? “Because there’s so much bollocks going on at the moment mate,” Tricky fires back. “People follow celebrities and read every little thing they do. It’s living vicariously through someone else. Get your own life. All this stuff is false idols. That’s what helps keep the status quo.” As to the label’s mission, Tricky puts it thusly: “I signed to Island because of the artists and some of the stuff they’ve done—Bob Marley, Tom Waits. Who could I sign to now? Am I going to sign to a label because they’ve got Lady Gaga? I don’t want to be part of that bollocks music industry. I’m trying to bring that Island kind of thing back. Obviously False Idols is never going to be an Island Records, but it’s my way of trying to keep that part of the music industry going.”

Since it’s a record highly influential for its time and even now, it makes sense to talk heavily about Maxinquaye, but the new project’s lead single “Nothing’s Changed” recalls lyrics from Martina Topley-Bird’s beautiful collaboration “Makes Me Wanna Die” off Tricky’s sophomore album Pre-Millenium Tension. The lead track also finds itself landing as if a blood-related, sonic brother to Mixed Race’s wonderfully engineered gracefulness, as opposed to the dense sonic spectrum of the one that started it all.

It’s all ironic, and taking away from the PR behind this new record, it’s still positively ironic given the song title and lyrical content. However, at the core of the song we’ve heard thus far, we have Tricky doing what he’s always done best: remaining eclectic, unafraid to borrow from his past works, draw from influences, and record undeniably raw vocal emotion from the artists on his guest spots. Along with Francesca Belmonte, other artists Fifi Rong, Nneka, and Peter Silberman have also given their helping hand to False Gods.

There’s also a cover of “Somebody’s Sins” by Van Morrison that we’re dying to hear.

It’s a short song, running at three minutes and nineteen seconds, but demonstrates that somethings have changed, but it’s all in the name of creating authentic pieces of music to unleash into the brooding world that surrounds Tricky’s untouchable discography.

False Gods is due out May 28th, 2013 in the United States. Snatch the free download of “Nothing’s Changed’ below.

Tori Amos Makes Thought Provoking Comment on the State of the Entertainment Industry

Tori Amos Flavor Peter Rauhofer

Pro Motion sat down with Tori Amos to discuss Peter Rauhofer’s dance remixes of “Flavor” off Abnormally Attracted To Sin and Gold Dust. Late last year, we gave a stunning review for the small EP, that you can see here, so we’re excited to see Amos praise the remixes as well.

Along with the announcement of a new record, which will stray away from the classical genre the artist has engulfed herself in these passed few years and is in the works for a 2014 release, Pro Motion inquired about the state of the music industry and how the singer/songwriter fits into that picture.

“…Singer-songwriters started to carve out a place for themselves and because of the time they were able to develop a career, and a body of work. Now, you have a lot less singer-songwriters that are given record deals, and you have a lot more television shows that are developing performers/singers who will do songs produced by people that the people who own the TV show want to have involved in the record. So, when that artist isn’t commanding the attention or selling the tickets anymore, then they can move that artist aside and they keep the producers in place. They keep the songwriters – or they bring in new songwriters – or they find a balance of them. They have a stable that can change. But, they keep changing the artist. So, the artist is much more disposable than it ever used to be and that’s the time we’re in.”

Intriguing perspective. Watch the interview below.
